Parliamentarians need our prayers

This week we focus on Parliamentarians and the 2016 Parliamentary Candidates for all the 297 constituencies in Ghana. They are essential stakeholders in the 2016 Parliamentary and Presidential Elections.

Their political behaviour on the ground and their political campaign practices could promote or destroy the peace in the communities before, during, and after the November 7, 2016 elections.

It is critical that they conduct themselves as agents of peace in the entire 2016 Election process. Ghana must remain peaceful for sustained development, and we must live in peace!

We pray that they will conduct themselves as truly “honourable”. The following is a profile from Psalm 15 of a genuinely honourable, and godly politician. A godly politician:

• Lives  a blameless life

• Does what is right

• Speaks the truth from the heart

• Has no malice on the tongue

• Never seeks to wrong their fellow

• Tells no tales against their neighbour

• Shows scorn for those who misconduct themselves, or behave inappropriately

• Honours those who fear God and uphold human dignity

• Holds to his oath (or promise), even to his own hurt

• Never accepts a bribe against the innocent, nor gives a bribe in their daily activities.

Psalm 15:1-6 Revised English Bible.

Pray that Parliamentarians and especially 2016 Parliamentary candidates will seek to be marked by, or redefined by the ten qualities listed above.

It is extremely important that we conduct our local constituencies and national politics in a godly manner, for the Bible says “by the blessing of the upright, a city is raised to greatness; but the words of the wicked tear it down.” (Proverbs 11:11 REB)

Therefore, please pray:

• That 2016 Parliamentary candidates will live blameless and exemplary leadership lifestyles in their communities

• That they will seek to do what is right, regularly in their campaign practices

• That their campaign messages will be truthful, and they will not speak out of malice

• That they will be careful not to wrong their political opponents, or tell tales and lies against them

• That they will be courageous to stop misconduct or inappropriate behaviour from their own supporters.

• That in their conduct of politics they will uphold human dignity, and be sincere and truly honourable in their practices

• Pray that the Parliamentarians and 2016 Parliamentary candidates will function as effective agents of peace, promoting peace in their constituencies.

• Pray for good and clean financial resources for all their costs,

• Pray for good health and safety in travel especially during their campaign season.

• Pray that they will experience co-operation from their constituency executives.

• Pray that those Parliamentary candidates who conduct themselves well will win the support of the voters in their constituencies

Ghana can only develop well in an environment of peace. Indeed, “righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproach to any people.” (Proverbs 14:34 NEB)
