Have faith, belief in Allah

The Quran has used diverse methods to establish the existence of Allah, the Almighty, the principal among them being appeal to human intellect and arousing the natural state of man in relation to Allah’s existence.

The Quran draws human intellect to the principle of cause and effect and states thus:

“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of the night and day, and the (great) ships which sail through the sea with that which benefits people, and what Allah has sent down from the heavens of rain, giving life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness and dispersing therein every (kind of) moving creature, and (His) directing of the winds and the clouds controlled between the heaven and earth are signs for a people who use reason” Quran 2:164

This creation should definitely have a Creator; and the existing unique organisation in creation must, of necessity, have a Unique Organiser.

The Quran thus argues: “Or were they created by nothing, or were they the creators (of themselves)?  Or did they create the heavens and the earth?  Rather, they are not certain. Quran 52:35-36

I have earlier indicated the position of Islam on the fact that belief in Allah, the Almighty, reflects the natural state of man.  The Quran asserts this point as an approach in establishing belief in Allah’s existence when it states:

“So direct your face (i.e. self) toward the religion, inclining to truth.  (Adhere to) the “fitrah” of Allah upon which He has created (all) people.  No change should there be in the creation of Allah.  This is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know.   Quran 30:30

Of course, the “fitrah” is the natural inborn inclination of man to worship his Creator prior to the corruption of his nature by external influences.  Sometimes, this natural state may be corrupted by conditions of comfort and enjoyment that the individual goes through.

The natural self under such circumstances radiates.  But when it (the self) finds itself in trying moments of difficulty and pain, it remembers its Creator for redemption.

That is the true and natural state of man expressed in a propensity to believe in Allah, the Almighty.

On this, the Quran states inter alia: “It is He Who enables you to travel on land and sea until, when you are in ships and they sail with them by a good wind and they rejoice therein, there comes a storm wind and the waves come upon them from everywhere and they assure that they are surrounded (i.e. doomed), supplicating Allah, sincere to Him in religion, “If You should save us from this, we will surely be among the thankful.”  Quran 10:22

Undoubtedly, the natural state of man propels him to have faith in Allah, the Almighty, if it is not corrupted.  This assertion can be likened to the state of a newly born baby who sucks the mother’s breast without being taught how to do that.

Instinctively, man gets hungry and tries to meet the needs of his hunger without realising what might have pushed him into that.  These are natural impulses at work and the source of belief in Allah, the Almighty, in man is like that.  It comes as a response to natural impulses within the human system.

Belief in Allah, the Almighty, calls for belief in His Oneness.  Islam states clearly and simply that Allah is One and Only.  At-Tawheed (Belief in Allah’s Oneness) is the first and key ideological foundation upon which Islam is built.

The Quran declares clearly thus: “And your God is one God.  There is no deity (worthy of worship) except Him, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful”.   Quran 2:163

The word “Allaah” is unique in Arabic Language.  It has no dual or plural sense, which in itself is a linguistic miracle expressed in portraying the Oneness of Allah.

Indeed, the name “Allaah” represents the Creator of all things and Who, Alone, deserves to be worshipped by man.  No one has ever borne that name before and no one will ever bear it, “Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them – so worship Him and have patience for His worship.  Do you know of any similarity to Him?”-  Quran 19:65.
