UMB holds tax seminar for Indian business community

Universal Merchant Bank (UMB) has held a seminar for the Indian Business Community on the theme, “Conquering the Tax Landscape in Ghana.”

The move was to afford UMB to strengthen its relations with the large Indian business community in the country.

In his opening remarks, the Chief Executive Officer of UMB, Mr John Awuah, highlighted the importance of the relations between Ghana and India and the tremendous contribution that the Indian community has made to the socio-economic development of Ghana over the years. 

He also praised the strong entrepreneurial drive and ambition of the Indian community in Ghana, which has led to the establishment and growth of several outstanding Indian-owned businesses in the country. 

Speaking on the theme for the seminar, he said that, “The tax regime in Ghana has seen a number of changes in recent times and it is important for businesses and entrepreneurs to understand how these changes can affect their operations and most importantly how they can navigate the tax landscape.”

A tax expert and Managing Partner at Ali-Nakyea and Associates, Mr Abdallah Ali-Nakyea, took participants through some of the recent changes in the tax regime in the country and outlined several key features that benefit entrepreneurs and businesses.

The heads of various business units within UMB also introduced participants to the bank’s impressive portfolio of products and services. 

UMB’s Director of Corporate Banking, Mrs Nelly Abotchie, spoke about the bank’s proposition for corporate entities while Mr Kevin Adarkwah, UMB’s Director of Treasury outlined the various treasury products and services that UMB offered. 

Other unit heads who spoke at the event included the bank’s Head of Business Banking, Mr Ernest Tetteh, Mr Jeffrey Odame–Yeboah, Head of Personal Banking and Mrs Elizabeth Naami Grant, Head of Private Banking. 

In her closing remarks, the Director of Marketing and Communications at UMB, Ms Yvonne Botchey, stated that, “UMB recognises that businesses in Ghana do not need just a bank, but they need a partner who will take the time to gain a deeper understanding of  their business goals and provide them with  the necessary support for achieving those goals. UMB has the products and the expertise to be such a partner to all businesses in Ghana.”

Participants expressed delight at the bank for organising such a successful event  and asked that such informative seminars become a regular feature on the bank’s calendar.
