Palm wins Xmas junior tennis

Benjamin Palm defeated his national team doubles partner, Emmanuel Plange, 6-2 to claim the flagship boys’ U-16 title at the Christmas Junior Open Championships last Monday.

The youth tournament, which began last Friday with 97 participants, came to a thrilling climax at the Accra Sports Stadium in front of a teeming crowd, with victorious Palm pressing home his dominance in the one set tie.

The early stages saw Palm build up an unassailable 3-0 lead which his opponent failed to recover from.

The tie was ultimately decided by Palm's ability to tease his opponent close to the net and lob superb shots behind him.

The 15-year-old, later in an interview, attributed his success to his brilliant start but praised his friend Palm for being a fierce competitor.

In another encounter, Michael Asokwa also beat Michael Nartey 6-2 to clinch third place in the boys U-16.

In the girls’ U-14, Perpetual Morgan of the Kaneshie Sports Complex beat Brianna Boateng 6-3 to win the trophy, while Naa McKorley, daughter of Daniel McKorley a major financier of Ghana tennis, upstaged Rahel Tagoe by 6-1 for third place.

Desmond Sackey overpowered Emmanuel Wettey by six games to three to annex the boys’ U-14 crown, and George Nyarko needed a tie-break to claim third place by defeating  Felix Hammond 7-6(2).

In the U-12 events, Aaron Asante emerged the boys’ champion with a 6-2 win over Isaac Martey. Lewis Nyaaba beat Wajega Akeikor to third with a 6-3 win, while in the girls’ final, Priscilla Kabuki Dossu emerged victorious with a 6-2 triumph over Monica Brobbey, with Patricia Nyarko grabbing third place.
