Novelty tennis league launched in Accra

A novelty tennis league that  will feature all  top ranked players in the country and social players of the various clubs was launched at the Accra Sports Stadium yesterday.

The event, being organised by the Ghana Tennis Federation (GTF), begins on November 1 with seven participating clubs.

They are Sakumono Tennis Club, Aviation Social Club, Stadium Tennis Club, 37 Tennis Club, Kaneshie Tennis Club, Accra Lawn Tennis Club and Babolat Tennis Club.

In the six month duration round robin all-play-all league Sakumono Tennis Club will battle Accra Lawn Tennis Club at Sakumono in the first match.

To ensure fair officiating at league matches, the GTF will train two umpires for each of the selected clubs and the bi-weekly league will also be played on home and away bases.

At the launch, the Director General of the National Sports Authority, Joe Kpenge, said he was hopeful that the programme would  resuscitate the love for the game among Ghanaians.

He pledged his  support for the league and entreated other sporting associations to organise similar leagues.

Mr Kpenge expressed worry about the dwindling fortunes of the lesser-known sporting disciplines but was hopeful of government’s support in future.
