French Open: Sharapova, Bouchard clash in semis
Eugenie Bouchard used to idolise Maria Sharapova, now she will face her in the semi-finals of the French Open.
Bouchard became the first Canadian woman to reach the French Open semi-finals last Tuesday with a thrilling 7-6 (7/4), 2-6, 7-5 win over Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro.
It is only the third time that a Canadian has made the women's semi-finals at any of the four majors after Carling Bassett reached the US Open semi-finals in 1984 and Bouchard herself went to the last-four at this year's Australian Open.
Sharapova on the other hand survived a scare to advance with a hard-fought win against rising Spanish star Garbine Muguruza.
As she did against Australia’s Sam Stosur in the previous round, tournament favourite Sharapova was forced to come back from a set down to win 1-6 7-5 6-1 in two hours and six minutes.
Andrea Petkovic reached her first grand slam semi-final with a thumping win over former French Open runner-up Sara Errani.
