Badminton, netball introduced in SHS

Senior high school (SHS) students as from this academic year would compete in both badminton and netball as part of efforts to promote the lesser-known sports in the country.

This follows the introduction of the two games by the National Sports Federation (NSF), the highest decision-making body of the Ghana Schools and Colleges Sports Federation for first and second cycle schools sports programmes.

The decision to introduce the two sports was taken at the annual technical and general meeting of the NSF at the Mawuli Senior High School in Ho.

With the approval, badminton would be played by both boys and girls while netball would be played only by girls.

The Deputy Greater Accra Regional Physical Education (PE) Sports Coordinator, Mr Michael Ntow Ayeh, who made this known to the Junior Graphic, said the motive behind the introduction of the sports was to unearth young talents at the SHS level for the country’s national teams.

He explained that the  schools were hitherto not competing in badminton and netball at the second cycle level, so these were two new additions.

“Because the two events are new, we would be having a refresher course for our PE Coordinators. This is to make them aware of the rules and their coaching aspects,” he said.

Currently, games that are competed in at the SHS level are football, volleyball, basketball, handball, table tennis, hockey and athletics, which comprise field and track events.
