WBC, world boxing greats honour Azumah
World boxing legend Azumah Nelson was last Saturday presented with a silver vase and two honorary boxing belts by the World Boxing Council in celebration of his 60th birthday.
The presentation ceremony was done mid-way through the series of five boxing bouts staged by the legend’s Azumah Nelson Sports Promotions at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra, during which he was eulogised by his peers and opponents, including one-time PNDC Secretary for Youth and Sports, Ambassador Amarkai Amarteifio;
WBC president, Mauricio Sulaiman; former four-weight world champion, Roberto Duran, one of the Ghanaian legend’s fiercest rivals, Jeff Fenech, celebrated ring announcer Jimmy Lennon Jnr, among others.
Ambassador Amarteifio in an address, urged Ghanaian youth to emulate the exemplary lifestyle of the world boxing legend Azumah Nelson (who turned 60 last Thursday) if they want to achieve their goals.
Mr Amarteifio was joined by Ghana Boxing Authority president, Peter Zwennes; Ghana first world champion, David Kotei(DK Poison); British High Commissioner, Iain Walker; Inspector General of Police, David Asante-Apeatu and the Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. Gen. Obed Akwa in the ring as he described Nelson as a true African hero who was a good example for the youth because of his discipline inside and outside the ring.
"I have known him since he was 15 years and he is a real and rare phenomenon, the pride of Africa and an icon," Mr Amarteifio said.
A video montage featuring current and former boxing professionals, including Sulaiman, Jesse James Leija, Duran, Julian Jackson, Gabriel Ruelas, Lennon Jr and Fenech was screened extolling the virtues of Nelson and wishing him a happy birthday.
Nelson was also greeted by a standing ovation by the spectators after he expressed gratitude to Ghanaians for supporting him throughout his career.
