Wa All Stars win StarTimes GFA Gala

Wa All Stars yesterday emerged winners of the 2017/2018 StarTimes GFA Gala after defeating Techiman Eleven Wonders 4-2 on penalties at the Nduom Sports Stadium in Elmina

Both sides failed to produce a goal during 63 minutes of regulation time and the match was decided on penalties.

All Stars took home the glittering trophy and the $2,000 cash prize at stake.

The Wa team took charge of the exchanges immediately referee Mac Lord Arhin whistled for the start of the game and made a few attempts at goal but their efforts were  thwarted by goalie George Ameyaw.

In the 20th minute, Seth Amoateng almost opened the scoring for All Stars when he tapped the ball from their opponents` 18 box  but keeper George Ameyaw was calculative enough with his saves to deny Amoateng the opportunity.

George Ameyaw’s effort saved Wonders once again from conceding a goal in the 32nd minute when he brushed off the ball over the bar after Isshaque Samaria had tapped the ball from the box.

The aggressiveness of All Stars forced referee Arhin to issue a yellow card to Kingsley Osei after he brought down an opponent in their half.

From recess, All Stars continued their search for goals as they kept goalie George Ameyaw busy while his counterpart was virtually on a holiday and during one of such encounters Ameyaw was injured which brought the game to a temporary hold as the medical team attended to him but he was later replaced with goalkeeper Baba Ali.

Eleven Wonders later found their steam matching their opponents boot for boot pushing for a goal in the 52nd and 55th minutes but their efforts did not materialise as the solid defenders of All Stars frustrated them.

Wonders coach, Abdul Mumuni Gamel, brought on Kwamena Emmanuel and Isaac Baah for Alex Asamoah and Kwaku Adu respectively in regulation time but to no avail as referee Arhin whistled to bring the game to a close.

On their way to winning the gala, the Wa lads defeated Division One League side Vision FC last Saturday, eliminated Accra Great Olympics 1-0 in yesterday’s quarter-final clash and beat Bechem United 2-0 to set up a final clash with Eleven Wonders.
