Turkson throws challenge to Gameboy, top lightweights

Boxer Samuel Turkson has thrown a challenge to former world champion Emmanuel 'Gameboy' Tagoe to face him in the ring to decide the true lightweight champion in the country.

The fighter known as 'Python' is also challenging fellow elite boxers George Ashie and Raphael Mensah to a showdown to determine the nation's premier lightweight boxer.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic after signing on a management contract with Adam Sackey, Turkson, who has a ring record of 12 victories and five losses in 17 professional fights, said he was ready to establish himself as the nation's number one lightweight boxer and eventually take on the best in the world.

"We all claim we are elite lightweight boxers so why are we running away from each other and not fighting each other to see the eventual champion?" he asked.

Turkson has set a target to claim the world title next year but wants to see a lot of competition among the top local boxers comparable to the hey day of legendary Azumah Nelson.

"During the days of Azumah Nelson he fought all elite boxers and they also fought him to determine the eventual champion so why are we avoiding each other" he wondered.

Turkson’s trainer, Richard Ashie Neequaye, also added that the boxing scene must have real champions before they can compete for world titles.

He said many of today’s boxers were avoiding one another because they were not what they claimed to be.

"If these boxers say they are really strong and powerful why don't they want to fight their peers," remarked the veteran trainer.
