Starlets win bronze in WAFU tourney

Ghana defeated Cote d’Ivoire 3-2 in a third-place match of the ongoing WAFU Zone B U-17 Championship to clinch the bronze medal this afternoon.

The Ivorians took the lead through Yan Diomande who scored from the spot in the early minutes before Abdul Rashid Adams levelled the score from another spot-kick, few minutes after conceding.
The Starlets increased the tally before the hour-mark through Richard Apokum after making good use of a low-cross delivered by Abdul Razak Adam in the 58th minute.

Twenty minutes later, the Ivorians pegged them back when Aboubacar Meite Sidick headed a cross from a close range to make it 2-2 for Cote d’Ivoire.
However, substitute Abdul Razak Salim snatched the match-winner for the Black Starlets in the 92nd minute after heading a cross delivered into the 18-yard box of the Ivorians by Andrews Appiah.

The two nations have missed out on the next edition of the Africa U17 Cup of Nations after losing to Burkina Faso and Nigeria in the semis of the tournament staged in Cape Coast.

The Black Starlets of Ghana wrapped up their campaign with a bronze medal after beating Ivory Coast 3-2 in the third-place game at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium.

Despite placing third, Ghana will not be part of the next edition of the Africa U17 Cup of Nations scheduled to be played in Algeria next year.
