Sports Ministry inaugurates five-member committee to raise funds for World Cup

The Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif has inaugurated a five-member committee with the task to raise funds for the upcoming FIFA World cup scheduled for Qatar in November.

 

The Committee will be chaired by chaired by Evans Opoku Bobbie, Deputy Youth and Sports Minister with John Kumah (Deputy Minister of Finance), George Mireku Duker (Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources), Andrew Egyapa Mercer (Deputy Minister of Energy), and Irene Sakyi (Chief Accountant of the Ministry) as members.

 

Inaugurating the committee, Mr Ussif noted that the Ministry decided to form the committee since government alone cannot shoulder the responsibility of providing the needed finance and logistics for the international competitions due to budgetary constraints.

 

He used the opportunity to extend his profound gratitude to corporate Ghana for responding positively to the President's call to solicit funds in support of the national teams last year to enable the national teams prepare feverishly for international competitions. 

 

He mentioned that the Ministry has a number of activities and international engagements such as the Women U-20 World cup in Costa Rica, World Athletics Championship in Oregon, USA, Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, and participation of the Black stars in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers in Cote d' Ivoire.

“Sports have contributed significantly to the country's economy in a variety of ways over the years. As a result, bringing in corporate entities to support us will strategically position our sports as a major economic driver,” parts of the statement read.

In his acceptance speech, the chairman of the committee, Mr Bobbie expressed his gratitude to the Minister for his vision to constitute the committee and assured him of their readiness to begin the engagement with various organisations and individuals to support the cause. 

 

For his part, the Chief Director of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Alhaji Hafiz Adam, indicated that the Black stars remains one of the power house of African football and their participation in the World Cup is of paramount interest to the nation and Africa as a whole.

 

Mr Adam explained that it was therefore important to galvanise support from the public to prepare the team adequately for the tournament and other international competitions.
