In accra, six teams will compete while four other teams battle it out for a similar Cup in Cape Coast.

Women’s rugby is said to be one of the fastest growing team sports in the world and it is played by more than 1.5 million girls and women in over 110 countries, more than 20 per cent of the total playing population.

Prior to the women’s matches, the GRFU junior teams will play a curtain- raiser.

International Women's Day is celebrated globally to acknowledge the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and to reinforce the advocacy for accelerating gender parity.

The president of the GRFU, Herbert Mensah,  explained that with the vision of  world rugby being “A Sport for All” and its mission to ‘Grow the Global Rugby Family’, it is important to recognise that women and girls form an integral part of that vision and mission.

He said rugby had been left behind and in the dark for most of the 12 years of the existence of the GRFU.
