Rawlings, Asiamah commission Asamoah Gyan Sports Complex

Hundreds, including former President Jerry John Rawlings and the Minister of Youth and Sports, Isaac Kwame Asiamah on Tuesday joined Black Stars skipper Asamoah Gyan to commission an AstroTurf project at the Accra Academy campus.

The first phase of the project, christened the Asamoah Gyan Sports Complex was completed at a cost of GH₵700,000 and includes a fenced AstroTurf pitch with floodlights. It will also have a tartan track and sports hall upon completion.

Former President Rawlings assisted Mr Asiamah to cut the ribbon to officially open the facility on behalf of President Akufo-Addo, who could not be at the ceremony because of other engagements.

Gyan, who put-up the facility through his BabyJet Foundation said he was hopeful that the turf will become the grooming grounds for greater sporting talents than himself.

He disclosed that his foundation was committed to social intervention programmes and has invested GH₵5million in such ventures.

Gyan was presented with a citation by his alma mater Accra Academy as well as the highest award of the school, the Order of Platinum.

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Isaac Asiamah praised the country's record scorer for his spirit of volunteerism.

He also charged the contractors of the AstroTurf, Wembley Sports Complex to provide the authorities of the school with a maintenance manual which will ensure that it will last.

Former Accra Great Olympics Coach, Godwin Attram netted the first goal on the Asamoah Gyan Sports Complex in an entertaining 1-1 drawn friendly between the Gyan 11 and PFAG Legends.

The second game between Accra Academy and Ebenezer Senior High School ended in a goalless draw.
