Kwesi Nyantakyi remains in charge of FA as President

Troubled Ghana Football Association President, Kwesi Nyantakyi, will continue handling his responsibilities at the football governing body as the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service investigates him for alleged criminal use of the name of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to induce a potential investor as captured on a secret tape by ace investigator, Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

Last Wednesday the police arrested Mr Nyantakyi on his arrival in Accra from international duty in Morocco, after which he was interrogated for several hours in a case brought before it by the President. He was granted bail later in the day and reported to the CID headquarters yesterday in the company of his counsel, Thaddeus Sory, to assist the police in the ongoing investigation.

And with no substantive vice president in place following the dismissal George Afriyie over a month ago after a fallout with Mr Nyantakyi, the Executive Committee (ExCo) of the FA held an emergency meeting yesterday to discuss the administration of the game and the fallout of the FA president’s case with the police.

Mr Kwesi Eyiah, a member of the FA’s Emergency Committee which sees to the day to day running of the game, chaired yesterday’s meeting at which members agreed that Mr Nyantakyi be allowed to continue with his role, while the FA would not rush into appointing someone to act as head of the FA.

Later Thursday, the FA issued a statement pledging their full support for Mr Nyantakyi and confirming that their beleaguered president remained in charge of affairs.

“Nothing has changed in terms of the GFA hierarchy and Mr Nyantakyi still remains the President of the Ghana Football Association.

“We wish to re-iterate that Mr. Nyantakyi has the full support of the Executive Committee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

“All offices and outlets of the GFA remain fully functional and we confirm that all scheduled activities of the federation continue without any hindrances,” the statement said.
