Golf: Vincent Torgah wins Mahogany Open

Vincent Torgah reenforced his reputation as Ghana's leading golfer claiming the first of four series of Road to Obotan Golf Championship played last Sunday at the Samartex Golf Club in Samreboi, Western Region.

The 38-year-old who also won the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) Prize last month, returned with a total score of 262 after playing 72 holes in the four-day tournament dubbed Mahogany Open Championship.

Experienced golfer Emos Korblah from the Achimota Golf Club returned with a total score of 264 to finish in second place while youngster Maxwell Owusu Bonsu from Royal Golf Club and Captain One Golf Society finished third on the leaderboard with a total score of 266.

Torgah received a wooden trophy and a cash prize of GH₡15,000 for his superior play on the greens while second-placed Korblah received a cash prize of GH₡8,000 with Bonsu bagging GH₡6,000.

Speaking in an interview with the media, Torgah said he achieved his victory through hard work and lots of commitment.

He commended Bonsu and Korblah for pushing him hard to get the win, adding that he would step up his training to ensure that he wins the second series.

Other winners

Dawuda Mahama finished top of the Seniors' leaderboard after three days of play with a total score of 218. He was followed by Victor Brave Mensah who returned with a total score of 223 and Robert Degbe with a score of 226.

In the regular amateur division, Jenny Lee won the ladies’ category with a score of 164 followed by Agnes Adams from Bogoso Golf Club with a total score of 169. Eric Ofosuhene led the men’s group with a score of 133 followed by Isaac Addae with a score of 137 while Peter Brakoh came third with a total score of 145.

A total of 11 amateur golfers also played to seek qualifications to become professionals.

After playing 48 holes over two days, Prince Agyiri from Damang Golf Club emerged winner with a score of 140 followed by Adam Abdallah with a score of 146 and George Basonege with a score of 148.
