The statement signed by the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Curtis Perry Kwabla Okudzeto also revealed that Ghana pipped Egypt to the hosting rights of the competition.

"The Ministry of Youth and Sports (MOYS) on behalf of Government is delighted to announce that Ghana has won the rights to host the 13th edition of the African Games in 2023 after beating Egypt," the statement said.

"The monumental achievement was declared at the 3rd Specialized Technical Committee on Youth, Culture and Sports (STC-YCS) forum of the African Union Commission Ministers' session in Algiers, Algeria on Thursday, 25th October, 2018".

The statement said the MOYS believes the competition represents a unique opportunity to rewrite the scripts of Ghana sports for the next century.

The Games will serve as qualifiers for the various disciplines for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
