Ghana set for World Athletics Relays

Ghana will send two teams to participate in next month’s World Athletics Relays in Poland to provide an opportunity for Ghana to qualify for the male and female sprints relays at the upcoming summer Olympics in Tokyo, the CEO of Ghana Athletics Association, Mr Bawah Fuseini, has disclosed.

He told the Daily Graphic that after the May 1-2 event in the Polish city of Silesia, Ghana would also use the African Athletics Championship as part of the preparation for the Tokyo Olympics from July 23 to August 8.

5 male, 4 female athletes

Mr Fuseini named the five-member men's team comprising, Joseph Paul Amoah, Benjamin Azamati, Sean Safo-Antwi and Edwin Gadayi, while the quartet of Flings Owusu-Agyapong, Janet Amponsah, Halutie Hor and Gemaa Acheampong will make up the female team who will both seek Olympic qualifying marks in Silesia.

The two sprints team failed to make the Olympic qualifying mark at the 2019 World Athletics Championship in Doha, Qatar.

So far only triple jumper Nadia Eke and sprinters Amoah and Azamati have booked their places at the Tokyo Games.

African Champs

For the June 1-5 African Senior Championship in the Algerian city of Oran, Ghana will send a small contingent, according to the GAA CEO.

“We want to go with only those who have qualified for the Olympic Games to use that as a major event in our preparation for Tokyo. We have a clear opportunity perform very well with those who are already Tokyo-bound, so we must concentrate on them.

“Since the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Ghana has never made it to the Olympic athletic final but this time I believe we have a good chance of reaching at least the semi-finals in Tokyo,” Mr Fuseini told the Daily Graphic.
