Ghana rout Fiji 11-2 at Hockey World League Round 2

Black Sticks striker, Johnny Botsio, inspired the national male hockey team to defeat Fiji 11-2 in the ongoing Hockey World League Round 2 match last Saturday.

Botsio, who has 12 goals to his credit in the tournament, scored five goals in the 7th and followed up with goals in the 20th, 21st, 22th and 56th minutes, with six other players adding their names to the score sheet against the Fijians in one of Ghana’s biggest victories in international competition.

The Black Sticks started their game by attacking in droves and opened the floodgates in the 7th minute through a beautiful penalty corner converted by Botsio, the tournament leading scorer. Five minutes later, Matthew Damalie Kobbie doubled the lead and Shadrach Baah made it 3-0 in the 17th minute.

The goal shook the Fijians who started pushing up to redeem a goal until they were rewarded in the 19th minute. But a minute later, Botsio made it 4-0 for Ghana and then scored twice in successive minutes as Ghana increased their goal haul to six. Elikem Akaba, Godsway Balaji and Richard Agyei added their names to the score sheet in the 25th, 29th and 32nd minutes respectively, but Fiji reduced the deficit in the 43rd minute before Nsalbini Salya and Botsio completed the rout in the 46th and 56th minutes respectively.

Eight countries -- Ghana, Malaysia, China, Egypt, Oman, Sri Lanka, Fiji and hosts Bangladesh  -- are battling for a top two finish in order to guarantee a place in the Hockey World League semi-finals, where the winners automastically qualify for the 2018 Men’s Hockey World Cup in India.
