Ministry secures funding for New Edubiase stadium

The Minister of Youth and Sports (MOYS), Mr Isaac Kwame Asiamah, has disclosed that his outfit has secured funding from the National Youth Authority (NYA) for the redesigning and completion of a multi-purpose youth and sports centre located at New Edubiase in the Adansi South District of the Ashanti Region.

The minister made this known after a tour of the construction site of the abandoned project yesterday.

Funding for the construction of a 10,000-seater stadium, which started in 2016 under former President John Mahama's administration, is currently the subject of probe by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI).

However, the minister said construction would soon be restarted because it formed part of President Akufo-Addo's commitment to "provide enough decent sports infrastructure to enable young people develop their talents".

He said the first phase of the project, which was projected to cost GH¢5.4million and included a FIFA-standard pitch and a dressing room, will be named the New Edubiase Youth and Sports Centre of Excellence.

"The ministry has secured a reliable source of funding for this project; funding that is backed by law. The National Youth Authority has come in and they have a budgetary allocation to provide facilities for youth development," Mr Asiamah said.

The minister revealed that the facility's current design had some defects, hence the need for a redesign which he expected from the contractor, Nurudeen Shakibu of Shakdeen Company Limited, in a week’s time.

He said facilities such as this and the other 10 multi-purpose youth and sports centres being constructed across the country had the potential to boost national development.

Mr Asiamah also commended the Queenmother of New Edubiase, Nana Alua Owum II, and the traditional authorities for providing acres of land for the project.

The NPP Member of Parliament for New Edubiase, Mr George Boahen Oduro, on behalf of the community, expressed gratitude to the MOYS and gave an assurance that the facility would be put to good use.
