Kotoko, Ashgold clash in maiden J.A. Kufuor Annual Cup in Kumasi

Kumasi Asante Kotoko and regional rivals, AshantiGold will revive interest in local football on Sunday as they clash in the maiden J.A. Kufuor Annual Cup at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

The match is one of the initiatives of former president John Agyekum Kufuor's foundation and aims to raise GHȻ80 million Ghana cedis in the next five years to promote its activities and to honour the ex-president.

The match, expected to be graced by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is also to climax the 80th anniversary of the former president.

The board chair of the Kufuor Foundation, Prof Baffour Agyemang Dua told a press conference in Kumasi Wednesday that all was set to honour the president on Sunday.

The team from the foundation, including it's ambassador, Black Stars Coach, Kwasi Appiah, two weeks ago called on the Asantehene at his palace at Manhyia where the king suggested the inclusion of Accra Hearts of Oak in the annual event to promote healthy rivalry.

Teams to participate in subsequent anniversaries would be determined by the foundation and the organisers, Primeval Media.

Kotoko, Ghana's sole representative in the CAF Confederation Cup are hoping to use the match to sharpen their rough edges ahead of their clash with Camerounian side, Cotton Sport.

Ahead of the game however, Ashgold have promised to be party spoilers and to dampen the spirit of the Porcupine Worriers.

Kotoko's representative, Sarfo Duku said the match was dear to the club for it would be a time to honour the former president who was once the club's board chairman.

The CEO of AshantiGold, Frederick Acheampong promised fans of a competitive game and an opportunity to reverse the last defeats at the hands of Kotoko before the league was truncated.

The owner and bankroller of Ashgold, Mr Kwaku Frimpong, has promised each player a 'slim phone' to motivate the team to win.

At stake is a giant trophy and a token sum donated by the foundation.

Referee Maxwell Mensah from Koforidua will officiate on Sunday.
