Gyekye shows class at MTN golf

The green course of the Tema Country Golf Club was the venue where Samuel Gyekye etched his name in the annals of the country’s golf to become the new MTN Invitational Golf Tournament champion last Friday.

Gyekye, from the Tafo Golf Club, returned a net score of 68 after showing class on the course right from tee-off before sinking his putt into the hole to be crowned champion of the men’s Group A event.

That performance shot him ahead of his closest challenger and member of the Achimota Golf Club, Felix Kwame Akafo, who was a point shy of the winner but beat James Kally on countback with 69 points to finish second.

Kally would be content with his third position, although he had showed much prospect despite the difficult obstacles on the Tema course.

Equally keen was the men’s Group B competition which saw Nash Antwi upstaging his challengers to emerge champion, having completed with a net score of 72 points.

Nana Dr Ani Agyei beat Francis Sonne on countback after both had recorded a net score of 73.

It was double delight for Floria Hurtubise who won the closest to the pin prize, as well as easily dominating the Group A event with a net score of 71 points followed in second place by Nana B. Tackie who scored 77 points.

Gladys Awuni won the ladies Group B event with 71 points ahead of Pamela Atila, who scored 76 points.

Other winners on the day included Jerry Tetteh, (Closest to the Pin) in men’s category, Isaac Amoako Mensah (Longest Drive for men) and Niine Sarpong who won in the Longest Drive for Ladies.
