Importance

In an interview on the sidelines of the closing ceremony of the course, Dr Austin Luguterah, the Head of Department, Physical Education and Sports Studies of the University said the course was vital because of reports of rising injuries in gyms.

He said the course was tailored for practising gym instructors and provided them with the knowledge needed to be effective.

"If as a gym instructor you don't have the knowledge you can hurt the people you train without knowing," Dr Luguterah said.

"We also taught them about how to manage and market a gym to ensure that you attract subscribers and retain them. A lot of people already have the technical knowledge of designing schedules but they lack knowledge of the day-to-day management of a gym".

A participant, Catherine Asare Frimpong of the University of Ghana Sports Directorate said the course was an "eye-opener" because of the insight it provided into training athletes to reach peak performance using the scientific method.
