Mr Abra Appiah — PLB outgoing boss

First Capital Plus Bank shocks GFA, PLB

The local league is likely to start next season without a sponsor following a decision by the headline sponsors, First Capital Plus Bank, to suspend its contract with the football governing body.

This was confirmed on Thursday by Mr Welbeck Abra-Appiah, the outgoing chairman of the Premier League Board (PLB), organisers of the domestic league.

Speaking to the Graphic Sports, the PLB boss said the news came as a surprise to him and wondered why the management of the bank waited till about a month to the start of the league to call for the suspension of the contract.

“Personally it came as a surprise to me. They made it known to us verbally at a short meeting last week Wednesday and we advised them to write to us formerly, but as I speak with you we’ve not heard anything from them”, the PLB boss said.

“I want to believe that they are reconsidering their decision because we have a very good relationship with them and I believe they want to respect that”, he added.

Asked whether the PLB would press legal charges in case there was a breach of contract, Mr Appiah stated that the executive committee was yet to meet and discuss the issue.

He, therefore, could not tell the next move of the association.

However, when Graphic Sports contacted Nana Yaw Kese, Head of Marketing and Corporate Affairs of the bank yesterday, he was non-committal, but inside sources said management was holding an emergency meeting to come out with a decision.

The First Capital Plus Bank became the leading sponsor of the league last year after signing a five-year deal worth US$10 million.

According to media speculations, the bank’s decision to suspend the contract, with the likelihood of abrogating it altogether, could be due to poor branding of the league, constant change of match dates, low attendances and poor publicity.
