Exchequers aim to shine in Abuja

Two years finishing fifth at the 2016 Hockey Africa Cup for Clubs in Kenya, Ghana’s Exchequers are back at the continental championship aiming to claim a medal when Africa’s finest male clubs gather in Abuja in two weeks’ time.

Exchequers, a dominant force in the Sapholda Hockey League in Accra, will represent Ghana in the December 15-23 tournament in the Nigerian capital.

The Bank of Ghana team pipped archrivals Royal Men of Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to win the 2018 Sapholda Hockey League undefeated.

To further underline their dominance, Exchequers added the Greater Accra Region Gala and the 2018 Homowo trophies as they continued their build up to the continental campaign.

Exchequers captain, Emmanuel Ankomah, told the Daily Graphic that he was confident the team would make Ghana proud in Abuja as they aim to win the competition.

“We have prepared well and our success in the league, gala and Homowo tournament attests to our current form and our determination to achieve success on the continental level,” he said.

The Sapholda League champions will be represented by key players such as Ankomah, Elikem Akaba, Elorm Akaba, Ebenezer Arthur, Samuel Agbeli, Samuel Agbeli, Osumanu Mohammed, Sylvester Apronti and Maxwell Osei.

Established in 1972, Exchequers were the first hockey club to represent Ghana at the continental level in 1988, but it was not until 1991 when they won silver.

Their next success coming seven years later as they claimed the bronze medal, a feat they repeated in 2002.
