Locals must make a case at WAFU tourney - Charges Kuffour

Former Black Stars defender, Samuel Kuffour, has challenged the Black Stars team B to win the upcoming West African Football Union (WAFU) tournament to prove themselves ready for selection into the main national team.

Kuffour explained that the home-based Black Stars ‘B’ have a responsibility of impressing Ghanaians as the WAFU tournament would test the quality of the local league.

The legendary Bayern Munich star was among Ghanaian legends who took part in the draw which pitted Ghana against the Gambia in the opening encounter on September 9.
The eight-nation tourney comes off from September 9 to 24 at the Essipon Stadium in Sekondi and the Cape Coast Stadium.

In an interview, Kuffour, a UEFA Champions League winner with Bayern in 2001, noted that the home-based players had no excuse to fail the country.

"The local players that will be playing the tournament cannot afford to miss out on winning the tournament because they could prove their worth to earn selection into the Black Stars team.

"This would be a good test for our local football to prove that we are doing the right thing and the team must go all the way to win the tournament this year. If they fail it means we have to change our style and do something better,” Kuffour said.

However, Kuffour indicated he anticipated a keenly contested tournament from each participating country with the quality of players they possessed.

“I am looking forward to a keenly contested tournament because we always have the best players in West Africa and all the teams would present a strong squad.

Kwasi Appiah’s Black Stars 'B', who are in Group A, will face their Gambian counterparts at the Essipon Stadium in Sekondi, with Nigeria also set to face Sierra Leone at the same venue.

Other Zone A matches are Mali vs Mauritania and Guinea vs Guinea Bissau.

The Cape Coast Stadium will host Senegal vs Liberia, Burkina Faso vs Niger, Cote d'Ivoire vs Togo and Benin vs Cape Verde.
