Lack of data stalls Sports Cul’s League deal

Uncertainty over data outlining the support base of clubs in the premier league has stalled a $44m sponsorship deal brokered by Sports Cul Ghana Limited for the local league last year.

Frank Nero Akuley of the Sports Cul, a subsidiary of GIBASS group of companies, explained to Graphic Sports yesterday that their foreign partners had put the deal on ice awaiting certain conditions be fulfilled before they would step in to invest any amount in the league.

The deal which was unveiled last year was expected to reward the winner of the league with US$400,000, US$300,000 for the first runner-up, and US$250,000 for the second runner up. That was aside a monthly wage of GH¢2000 for each premier league player and GH¢1,000 each monthly for division one, women’s league players and other lesser known sports.

But after a failed attempt by a consultant to gather this data, the foreign partners have tabled a new deal that would allow them to pull out after just two years of trial instead of the proposed 12-year deal that was initially agreed upon.

Sports Cul appears to be displeased with this latest development and have begun negotiations with their partners to reconsider their stand because pulling out after two seasons could hurt the league and football in general in the country.

“Imagine a player earning GH¢2000 each month for two years and after that you ask him to go back to the peanut salary. This will create a big problem,” Mr Nero, the chairman of GIBASS envisaged.
