GFA, Glo for another deal?

Despite the huge challenges that have characterised the sponsorship deal with telecommunication company, Glo Mobile, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is considering extending its relationship for another period at the instance of the company.

However, an extension of the Glo deal is dependent on the company settling all its outstanding arrears of about $3million by the first week of September.

The Graphic Sports has learnt that a delegation from the GFA last week met with Glo officials in Nigeria where the issues were discussed, including talks of a possible extension of the league sponsorship if the existing arrears were cleared on the agreed time.

The GFA president, Kwesi Nyantakyi, confirmed the ongoing talks and arrangement to the Graphic Sports and indicated that both parties were interested in retaining the relationship.

“We had discussions and both parties are interested in keeping the deal, but we have also told the sponsor in clear terms that the outstanding bills must be cleared by the first week of September. They have agreed to do, so we are on course.”

The admission by Mr Nyantakyi puts to rest rumours that the GFA was seeking other sponsors following the torrid relationship with Glo. He explained talks with South Africa pay-TV SuperSport were for the league’s media rights and for its title sponsor.

Despite advanced talks between the GFA and Glo over a new deal, the FA must first convince the 16 Premier League clubs to go along with them as they meet today to discuss the thorny sponsorship issue.

The clubs have on many occasions expressed their frustration over Glo’s failure to keep to the timelines for payment and once contemplated terminating the five-year deal which ended last season.
