Bolga AllStars, Olympics, Tema Youth relegated

Accra Great Olympics, Tema Youth and Bolga AllStars all returned to Division One football after exiting the Premier League after losing yesterday’s final round of matches which left them as the competition’s bottom three sides.

The trio returned to the football wilderness after just one season in the elite division after Olympics were beaten 1-0 by another relegation-threatened side, Bechem United, at the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park at Bechem, while Berekum Chelsea ended Tema Youth’s hopes with a 2-0 win at the Golden City Park.

With bottom club Bolga AllStars already relegated before yesterday’s matches, their 1-4 loss to Ebusua Dwarfs enabled the Cape Coast side jump to the fourth position on the league log as Tema Youth (37 points) and Olympics (36 points) finished in 14th and 15th positions respectively.

The win for Bechem and a scoreless draw for Inter Allies ensured they both survived the relegation as they finished in 12th and 13th positions respectively.

At the Accra Sports Stadium, Allies earned the vital point against third-placed Accra Hearts of Oak to secure their place in the league after taking their points haul to 40.

After coming close to scoring through Abdul Nasiru Hamzah in the 24th minute and dominating most parts of the first half, the Phobians, who rested many of their top starts for Sunday’s MTN FA Cup final, held on to halftime, reports Bernard Neequaye.

After recess, Hearts goalie, Sylvanus Gbeti, was called to duty by making two great saves in the 48th and 50th minutes as Martin Antwi of Allies saw his 20-yard shot denied a goal before going close again when he missed a one-on-one situation.

At the Carl Reindorf Park at Dansoman, Liberty Professionals came from behind to claim a 2-1 victory over Kumasi Asante Kotoko to cruise to the 11th position on the league log, reports Beatrice Laryea.

Liberty could have scored more goals as they overpowered the Porcupine Warriors in most departments of the game, but for striker Bernard Arthur who was wasteful on the day, including missing a spot kick much to the displeasure of the sizable fans.

It was Baba Mahama who put the Porcupine Warriors ahead in the 35th minute when he chanced upon a pass from Kwame Boahen in their opponents’ 18-yard box which he converted beautifully.

However, the joy of the visiting side was shortlived when Samuel Sarfo cancelled the lead in the 66th minute before substitute Samuel Annan scored the match-winning goal in the 74th minute to secure Liberty’s stay in the competition as they took their points tally to 41 to finish ahead of Bechem and Inter Allies on the log.
