‘Sanction boxers who fail to honour fights’ - GBA urged

Two veteran boxing trainers have called on the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) to sanction boxers who refuse to fight their Ghanaian opponents in the same weight division.

They contended that as an authority, the GBA must insist on fights, irrespective of the differences between the two boxers.

“This would ensure competition and adequately prepare our boxers for world title bouts,” Abdul Rasheed Williams, alias Believer, and Coach Charles Mahama told the Graphic Sports in an interview in Accra last Tuesday.

Coach Williams, 57, of the Believer Boxing Gym, noted that too many unique fights of national interest had gone awry due to boxers’ reluctance to fight their opponents or the tendency of some boxers to look down upon their opponents.

He urged the GBA to put its feet down and clamp down on such a negative practice. The renowned matchmaker cited the unfulfilled fights involving Rafael Mensah and Emmanuel Tagoe, and the between George Ashie and Emmanuel Tagoe match-up as bouts which the public wanted to see but they did not happen due to the egos of the two boxers.

Coach Mahama, 62, added that the challenge thrown by WBO Africa bantamweight champion, Prince “Octopus” Dzanie, to former world champion, Joseph Agbeko, in Ghana must be accepted by the latter.

According to him, such a bout would spur the sport on and make boxing competitive in the country.

Both trainers bemoaned the lack of sponsors to promote fights in the country, which they said, stalls the organisation of boxing matches.
