Neequaye to officiate women’s fight in Kenya Saturday
Renowned boxing referee and judge, Michael Neequaye, has been appointed by the World Boxing Council (WBC) to officiate the super bantamweight world title fight between Fatuma Zarika and Catherine Phiri at the Carnivore Grounds in Nairobi, Kenya, on Saturday.

Zurika became the first Kenyan to win a WBC title in October 2016 when she won a 10-round split decision over incumbent Alicia Ashley of Jamaica.
Neequaye, one of the nation’s top referees/judges who has been officiating world title bouts for the past decade, departed Accra yesterday to Nairobi for the assignment.
He told the Graphic Sports in an interview in Accra ahead of his departure that officiating in a women’s boxing bout was a new challenge for him.
He embraced the opportunity as a great feat and promised to use the experience gained to conscientise women boxers in the country about the rules of the game.
“I am really excited about this new challenge. I will go to Kenya with an open mind and apply lessons gained for the benefit of our female boxers in the country,” he stated.
Neequaye was recently honoured at the just ended World Boxing Council (WBC) Convention in Baku, Azerbaijan, in October.
He is expected back in the country on December 5.
