GBA to sue Ghana Police Service

The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) is contemplating suing the Ghana Police Service over the abrupt end of Isaac Aryee’s career following his alleged knock down by a police officer a few months ago.

The GBA explained that it was keen on dragging the Ghana Police Service to court for attempting to cover up for an errant officer whose name was only given as Aikins.

Peter Zwennes, the president of the GBA, told the Graphic Sports that they were only waiting for a report to facilitate the process.

He stressed that it was prudent for his outfit to seek damages for the former national welterweight champion who had lost his source of livelihood because of the incident, having been confirmed as being unable to box again.

Mr Zwennes was not happy with the way the Korle Bu District Police, which is in charge of the case, was handling it, having failed to make any arrest since the incident, with investigators claiming that the suspect was not the cause of the accident.

According to eyewitnesses, Aryee, who was being pursued by a police patrol vehicle for driving an unlicensed motorbike, was knocked down in the process on the mortuary road in Accra.

The police vehicle then sped off, leaving the boxer to his fate, until a passer-by came to his rescue and rushed him to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital where he was operated upon.

"We are currently waiting for the report before suing the Ghana Police Service because Isaac Aryee has lost his source of livelihood as a result of the incident.

"They must pay damages to the boxer who was in his prime before this unfortunate incident happened as he cannot box again," Mr Zwennes said.
