Commey must fight strong opponents — Ike Quartey

Former WBA welterweight champion, Ike "Bazooka" Quartey, has called on the management of lightweight contender, Richard Commey, to test him against strong opponents to build him up for future fights.Quartey, who won the WBA welterweight title in 1994 after beating the then-undefeated Crisanto España of Venezuela, said Commey needs more fights to prove his worth if he is to realise his dream of becoming a world champion in the near future.

In an interview with the Graphic Sports, Quartey noted that Commey has a lot to do to reach the status as one of the best pound for pound boxers in the world.

"I think his management must get him more strong fights to test him for a possible world championship fight. This is the only way to prove your worth as a boxer.

"Commey has a lot to do in his career to be able to become a world champion but I trust him to come back stronger after two disappointing losses," he said.

Commey (25-2, 22KOs) is yet to fight since outboxing Hedi Slimani to win the vacant WBC International Silver Lightweight title in March this year after his supposed fight with Russia's Roman Andreev was called off.

The 30-year-old Commey lost controversial split decisions to Robert Easter Jr of America and Russia's Denis Shafikov last year in a vacant IBF lightweight title challenge and an eliminator respectively.

The IBF is yet to announce a new opponent for the Ghanaian after his supposed lightweight title eliminator with the Russian on December 9, which was to produce a mandatory challenger for Robert Easter Jr (20-0, 14KOs), was cancelled due to Andreev's promoter, Vlad Hrunov, failing to fulfil his part of the bargain.
