Renowned international boxing referee and judge, Tony Weeks, has called on Ghanaian officials to be abreast of the rules of the sport to prevent tragedies in the ring.

Weeks, who is in the country to officiate the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) super bantamweight championship fight between Ghana's Isaac Dogboe and Javier Chacon of Argentina, advised participants to broaden their minds on the rules of boxing during a workshop organised by the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) at the Kempiski Gold Coast City Hotel in Accra last Wednesday.

Addressing the over 100 participants which included boxers, referees and coaches, Weeks praised the nation for its immense contribution to the development of boxing in the world.

He described Ghana as a "hub of boxing" where world champions emanate from and called on upcoming puglists to emulate former boxing greats, Azumah Nelson and Ike Quartey.

"As officials, it is your duty to be abreast of the rules of sport in order to prevent tragedies in the ring.

"It will be in your interest to uphold the values of sport and I believe Ghana has done that over the years," Weeks said.

"This country has produced a lot of great boxers, with Azumah Nelson and Ike Quartey being great examples and I urge the upcoming ones to emulate them," he added.

On his part, the president of the GBA, Peter Zwennes, told the Graphic Sports that his outfit decided to tap into Weeks' rich experience in the sport to impart more knowledge to officials in the country.

He said it was just prudent to take opportunity of his arrival in the country to build the technical aspect of the sport among stakeholders.

"We are happy to take advantage of his arrival in the country to build the technical know-how of officials in the sport to help in the development of boxing in the country," Zwennes noted.
