Triathletes gear up for race Sunday

Over 70 triathletes from Ghana and neighbouring countries have registered to participate in the 6th Kempinski-Cowbell Race Series scheduled to take place at the swimming pool of the University of Ghana, Legon, on Sunday.

A triathlete is a person who participates in three different events during a competition.

The event, an initiative of the Ghana Triathlon Federation (GTF), will see athletes competing in the 600m swimming, bike 18.9km and run 5.6km.

The route will take participants from the Legon Swimming Pool through some principal streets of the university campus and to the finish line at the swimming pool area.

This latest event comes after the GTF’s successfully-organised first ever “Children and Youth Triathlon” race, also at Legon last month.

The federation subsequently sealed sponsorship deals with the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City and Cowbell Ghana, enabling them to organise three triathlon events annually.

Owing to the success of the races and sponsorships, Ghana has been able to take part in the Africa Triathlon Union (ATU) and Pan Arab Championships in Sharm El Sheik, Egypt, on two occasions.

Triathletes Abdul Rauf Zakaria and Laila Werburi Zangwio made the trip to the championships in Egypt earlier this year, with Laila clinching an impressive first place in her age category.
