Rio Olympics: Christian Amoah to represent Ghana in weightlifting

The Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF) has selected Christian Amoah as Ghana’s representative for this year’s Olympic Games to be staged next month in Brazil. The 17-year-old weightlifter started his journey in the sport in 2013.

He participated in the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympic qualifier in Tunisia where he placed 5th in the 77kg category. Amoah also took part in the 2014 Africa Youth Games in Botswana where he placed 3rd in the 77kg category.

A press statement signed by the Deputy General Secretary of GWF, Kenneth Odeng Adade said his outfit after rigorous training sessions and consultations settled on Master Amoah as the country’s representative for the Games.

Amoah has also represented Ghana in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland and also the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Championship in USA in 2015.

During last year’s All African Games in Congo, the athlete again finished 6th in the 85kg category and also placed 5th in the same category at the African Rio Olympic qualifier in Cameroon this year.

The statement charged the youngster to "do his best best to raise the flag of Ghana high at the Olympic Games".
