Important dignitaries including the Vice-President, Kwesi Amissah Bekoe-Arthur, had the privilege of handling the baton which was made possible by Nunoo Mensah and his team of organisers, including Professor Francis Dodoo, Reverend Richmond Quarcoo, Nana Adu Mankattah III and Hussein Addy.

At the hand over ceremony in Accra last Sunday, Mr Nunoo Mensah expressed gratitude to  Sharad Lao and the CGF for bringing the baton to Ghana, and assured them of Ghana’s commitment to stick to the tenets of the Commonwealth.

The baton had since left Ghana for Nigeria for the next stage of the Relay Tour of Africa.

The make-up of the baton

The Commonwealth Queen’s Relay Baton is specially designed to embody Glasgow and Scotland’s culture, history and reputation.

It has a message from the Queen written on parchment made in Glasgow from linen plant fibre.

The lattice frame of the baton is engineered from pure titanium, and is inspired by Glasgow’s rich industrial and architectural heritage, which uses state-of-the-art laser technology to construct its delicate layers.

The baton’s handle is made of elm wood, representing Scotland’s natural resources, and was made using traditional methods from Scotland’s brat-building heritage.

The baton contains granite gemstones, which will be gifted to each nation. The stones emanate from the firth of clyde, and are released by a special puzzle mechanism. They were handcrafted by designers at Glasgow’s School of Art.
