According to the Managing Partner of the MMSL, Mr Ashim Morton, the move is to motivate Ghanaian marathon runners to give off their best in long distance races.
Last year's race was dominated by foreigners, with Ethiopian duo, of Tereta Debela and Ayele Gedamu Gebeyawesh driving away the Peugeot cars as winners of the male and female categories respectively.
The highest placed Ghanaians in last year's race were Millicent Boadi and William Arkuka, who finished second and third in the respective female and male categories.
However, Mr Morton believes the competition will not be robbed of the best marathon runners of the world as there were lucrative cash prizes at stake on September 3.
At a press briefing last Friday at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) premises in Accra, Mr Morton said the winners of both the male and female categories of the 21-kilometre marathon would each go home with GHȼ40,000.
He added that the second and third placed runners would receive GHȼ25,000 and GHȼ10,000 respectively, while the top 3000 runners would all receive medals for participation.
The Chief Executive of AMA Alfred Oko Vanderpuye charged Ghanaian participants to ensure that the Peugeot cars remained in the country.
The marathon runners are expected to start from the Independence Square, Atta Mills High Street, Makola, Farisco, Trade Union Congress, Movenpick Ambassador Hotel, Independence Avenue, 37 Military Hospital, Burma Camp, La Beach Road and ends back at the Independence Square.
