Ghana seeks Rio glory in athletics as Amankwah goes into action today

Athletics takes centre-stage at the Olympic Games today with 800 metres runner Alex Amankwah a hot favourite to progress from the first round heats at the Estadio Olimpico Joao Havelange in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The Alabama University student was the first Ghanaian to qualify for the Olympics last December after running a personal best 1.45.91 s to qualify for the Games.

Ahead of the start of the athletics schedule, the women's 4x100m relay team went on a tour of the Olympic Stadium last Wednesday.

Ghana’s team which consist of Gemma Acheampong, Beatrice Gyaman, Dorcas Gyimah, Persis William-Mensah and Akua Obeng-Akrofi toured the facility in the company of team officials and their coaches. 

However, the relay team is not expected on the track till August 18 when the first relay heat will be held. 

Also in action today, will be 17-year-old weightlifter Christian Amoah who will participate in the 85kg category at the Riocentro-Pavilion 2.

On Saturday, Sean Safo-Antwi will make his debut since switching nationality from Great Britain to Ghana in the 100 metres Round 1 heat.
