Doris steals show at GNPC Ghana's Fastest Human trials

Doris Afriyie of the Ashanti Region stole the show when the GNPC Ghana’s Fastest Human athletics competition started with the audition event last Saturday at the Sekondi Stadium at Essipon for athletes in the Central and Western regions.

The year’s maiden event saw young athletes compete in back-to-back 100 metres sprints for under-10, under-15, under-18 and seniors categories.

Among the outstanding talents unearthed was Doris, who won the girls’ under-15 sprint with an impressive time of 11.85 seconds. The 11-year-old prodigy’s performance was remarkable as her winning time was faster than that recorded by the winner of the seniors event for ladies.

The men’s seniors category was won by Charles Okyere in a fast time of 10.36 seconds, making him the fastest local athlete in Ghana to date.

A total of 27 athletes automatically qualified from the Essipon event for the September 16 final in Kumasi.

GNPC Ghana’s Fastest Human makes its next stop in Tamale on May 27 to select athletes from the Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions.

The competition is sponsored by GNPC with support from Adidas, Red Sea Maritime, Indomie, Wrenco Printing, Global Media Alliance, Moringa King, Pippas Gym and Kryate Linc Advertising.
