Adjetey’s missed opportunity

One of Ghana’s outstanding taekwondo athletes, David Koney Adjetey,  missed an opportunity to be considered for the 2016 Olympics after failing to compete in last month’s Grand Prix in Kazakhstan.

Adjetey, a US-based fighter, was invited by the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) to participate in the two-day competition which took place from August 29-30.

However, the failure of the Ghana Taekwondo Federation (GTF) to  provide financial support  to the US based athlete denied him that opportunity to be in Kazakhstan for the Grand Prix.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic from his Utah base in the USA, a devastated Adjetey, who holds 36 medals in his career said, “I was really disappointed to be told by the Ghana Taekwondo Federation that there was no money for the championship”.

“I have been training hard to make sure I win gold at this championship only to miss out of this rare opportunity because of financial reasons,” Adjetey  bemoaned .

When the Daily Graphic spoke to the Ghana Taekwondo Federation (GTF) the Public Relations Officer, Adnan Lamptey, noted that the GTF sought financial support from the World Taekwondo Development Fund to help Adjetey compete, but were denied.

While expressing concern about the situation, he assured that the GTF would respond to the  financial needs of Adjetey in subsequent championships.

“We  wanted him to participate at the Grand Prix, so we wrote to the World Taekwondo Development Fund to help finance his trip to Kazakhstan, but the request was rejected,” he explained, assuring that “the federation will always support  him in subsequent championships.”
