Abugri, Ghana’s lone ranger

With just two days to end the 20th Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Ghana’s Razak Abugiri remains the nation’s only medal winner after 10 days of intense competition.

There have been some valiant attempts by some Ghanaian athletes, especially young swimmers, Ophelia Swayne, Abeiku Jackson, Kweku Addo, Nana Kwabena Antwi and Jackson Abbiw who represented the nation for the first time in that event at the Commonwealth Games.

Four years ago, Ghana won three medals (one silver and two bronze) at the 2010 Games in New Delhi, but hopes for a bigger medal haul in Glasgow keep fading by the day as Ghanaian boxers, track and field stars, and weightlifters failed to make any impact in their events.

However, Ghana’s real hopes for another medal is likely to fall on the women’s sprints quartet of Beatrice Gyaman, Janet Amponsah, Flings Owusu-Agyapong and Gemma Acheampong when they step into the tracks this evening at Hampden Park Stadium for the 4x100m heats.
