The sponsorship package includes prize moneys and organisational costs.

Prize money for the winners in the mass sports event in both the male and female categories has been increased from GH¢10,000 to GH¢12,000, while winners of the junior sports (both male and female) would also walk away with GH¢2,000, GH¢800 more than last year’s winner’s prize.

At the official launch of the 27th edition of the competition in Accra last Friday, Moataz El Hout, managing director of Nestle, explained that the investment reinforced their commitment to unearth and nurture talents for the world stage.

As part of its quest to ensure talents are encouraged to get to the ultimate this year, the company expects to distribute 2000 shoes to children with sports inclination in 40 under- privileged schools across the country.

More than 8000 people are expected to be registered for this year’s race, and to ensure registration fraud is completely eliminated, laser printed materials will be used, while registration for the junior sports would be done in schools to emphasise the relevance of education for the children, and to curb age cheating.

Olufemi Akintola, category brands manager of cocoa beverages at Nestle, said the 42.2km distance would be maintained for the mass sports just as the 5km distance for the junior sports, with some 3000 athletes expected to compete in the mass sports and 5000 in the junior sports.

First and second runners-up of the mass sports would receive GH¢8,000 and GH¢6,000 respectively, while GH¢1,500 and GH¢1000 would be up for grabs for the first and second runners-up in the junior sports respectively.
