Tension is mounting among the Ghana Tennis Association, Ghana Handball Association and the Ghana Volleyball Association over who has the right to use the tennis courts at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The three bodies are laying claim to the three-court facility as their permanent venue for training and hosting of their respective league matches after using the courts for training and hosting of the Under-20 handball championships, ECOWAS Games and Security Services Games.
But the Ghana Tennis Association (GTA) is claiming exclusiveand unfettered right to the use of the courts.
Speaking to the Daily Graphic, the acting Public Relations Officer of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Hamid Issaka, cautioned all three parties to exercise restraint since consultations were going on among the top hierarchy of the associations and the NSA to ensure an amicable settlement.
He said the problem arose when the facility was temporarily given to the Handball and Volleyball associations to use for practicein preparation for major competitions such asthe ECOWAS Games.
According to Mr Issaka, some alterations and ground work were done to alter the structure of the court to fit the style and nature of handball and volleyball which had contributed to the two disciplines claiming the right to use the tennis courts.
However, he stated that the court actually belonged to the tennis association which had the right to restore the facility to its former state while noting that the NSA would look for a place for the two other disciplines to train.
However, the vice-president of the handball association, Nortey Dowuona, is adamant that his outfit would not vacate the courts anytime soon, insisting that “since it is a state structure and belongs to the NSA, all other associations have the right to train there,” he stressed.
He noted that for sometime now volleyball and handball players had struggled to find a training ground and sometimes ended up not training at all to the detriment of the nation. He applauded the retrofitting of the facility to suit the style and nature of volleyball and handball was in the right direction since it would afford the other two associations the chance to also have a place to train.
