SHE’S gradually catching the limelight in international circles and the next platform for an exhibition of singer, SSUE’s delectable fare is Felabration, the big annual cultural event that celebrates the life and times of the late Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

Though observed in about 15 countries, the largest bash has always been in Lagos, Nigeria since the inception of the programme in 1998 by Fela’s daughter, Yeni.

This year’s events start from Saturday, October 12 and SSUE will perform on Thursday, October 17 at the New Afrika Shrine and on Friday, October 18 at the Freedom Park.

SSUE says her New Afrika Shrine show will incorporate a style she calls neo-Afrobeats; her take on material by Osibisa, Hugh Masekela and Fela Futi, injected with her own sassy vibes.

She will unleash a repertoire of her own items, including Boom Boom Bang Bang, Hypnotyze, Twinkle, Should I and Baasumo Me  at the Freedom Park concert.

Her contingent to the festival include the eight-piece Ananse band; her two dancers; duet partner, Imma Emmanuel; Scratch Studios  Associate Director, Paa K. Holdbrook-Smith and her current manager, Richard Imoh Akpan.

“Fela was a huge force on the world scene and I’m  proud to be among  those to perform to celebrate him this year,” SSUE said.

Ghana and Nigeria have had strong musical ties for a long time and there has been regular Ghanaian presence at Felabration programmes since the birth of the festival.

Ghanaian acts that have been at Felabration in Lagos in the past include Wanlov, Yaa Pono, Efya, Kyekyeku, Yasmeen Helwani, Tumi Ansah and Knii Lante.

Fela visited and performed in Ghana several times and also worked with many Ghanaian musicians during his lifetime.

It is recognised in respected music circles globally that he was inspired by Ghanaian Highlife to create his Afrobeat genre.

Apart from music performances, there are also symposia and debates on various aspects of African culture and popular music at Felabration.
