Brother Sammy arrested
Gospel artiste, Brother Sammy

The Public Relations Officer of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) Mr. James Lartey has given reasons for arresting famous Gospel musician Brother Sammy on Friday June 21 in Kumasi.

Brother Sammy known for songs such as Menso Mene Hwan, Nyame Ne Hene was arrested by the Ashanti Regional Police to assist investigations into selling on social media an unapproved product which he claims cures various diseases.

For the past three weeks, Brother Sammy who featured on Patience Nyarko's hit song, Obi Nyani Me, has been on social media claiming he has cured over 50 people suffering from Hepatitis B, asthma, cancer, HIV, hypertension and other chronic diseases with his 'spirtual healing water'.

Mr. James Lartey told Agyemang Prempeh, host of Power Entertainment on Power FM on Saturday, June 22 that selling of products that cure HIV/AIDS and other diseases without the approval of FDA was against the law thus the arrest of Brother Sammy.

“We saw adverts rolling on social media about the diseases his 'spiritual healing water' could heal.

"Some of our workers therefore disguised themselves as interested in the product and purchased some from Brother Sammy just to verify that he was indeed selling such a product.

"When it was confirmed he was actually selling the product then the police arrested him” he said.

According to Mr.Lartey , they had to go after Brother Sammy because Ghanaians will be quick to blame the FDA should anything happen to the people who patronise  Brother Sammy's substance.

“Any product that deems to cure a human being without an approval from FDA is wrong and we will act on that when it comes to our notice.

"Brother Sammy boldly advertised that he has cured over 50 with his 'spiritual healing water' and added a number for anyone seeking healing to call. That is so wrong and FDA condemns such a move” he said.

When the host asked why the FDA is not arresting other men of God who have been advertising and selling products such as 'spiritual perfume' which they claim cure diseases, Mr.Lartey said his outfit will look into that, visit such churches and deal with such men of God.

Meanwhile, the FDA in a statement signed by its Chief Executive Officer, Mrs Delese A.A.Darko and issued on Saturday, June 22 on Brother Sammy’s spiritual healing water informed the public it had not registered any product for the cure of HIV/AIDS, neither has any approval been given to the artiste for the production and sale of any FDA regulated product.

"The public is therefore advised  to contact the FDA should they have any additional information on the issue, it said.
