Veep cuts sod for 600-bed dormitory for TAMASCO-MTN sponsors project

The Vice-President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, last Saturday cut the sod for the construction of a 600-bed girls' dormitory and a masters’ bungalow for the Tamale Senior High School (TAMASCO) in the Northern Region.

Tamasco, the premier institution for secondary education in northern Ghana, was established in 1951. It is one of the SHSs in the country offering its students the seven programmes available under the new educational reform.

Telecommunications company, MTN Ghana, is sponsoring the project through its charity wing, the MTN Ghana Foundation, at a cost of GH¢2 million as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR).

Work on the project is expected to be completed in eight months and, when completed, it will enable the school to admit more female students.

It will bring to 148 the number of projects undertaken by the foundation in the country since its establishment in 2007.

In all, $13.5 million has been expended on those projects.

Significance

Dr Bawumia described the project as “the largest single investment in infrastructure since the school was established decades ago”.
He said the project was in line with the government’s efforts to improve access to female education in the country.

“The numerous projects MTN has carried out are an indication of it being a socially responsible corporate organisation interested in impacting on the lives of its clients and communities,” he said.

He emphasised the government's commitment to promote education and make sure that poverty was no longer an excuse for Ghanaian children not to reach their full potential.

While commending the MTN Ghana Foundation for initiating the project at a time it was most needed to help accommodate fresh students, the Vice-President urged parents to embrace the free SHS policy by enrolling their children in school.

Youth development

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTN Ghana, Mr Selorm Adadevor, said the project formed part of the commitment by the company to transform the lives of the youth in the country.

“Our social responsibility includes helping to unlock opportunities for all and we believe this project will unlock opportunities within this community.

It is important that, as a nation, we create the enabling environment that will help the youth develop their physical and mental abilities to unlock the opportunities available for them for the development of our beloved country," he said.

He urged both the school authorities and the contractor to collaborate to ensure the smooth and timely completion of the project.

Commendation

The Headmaster of the TAMASCO, Mr Suaib Wilberforce Adams, expressed gratitude to MTN for the project and pledged that the facility would be put to good use when completed.
