US lauds Ghana for seamless transfer of power

United States of America has once again lauded Ghanaians and their institutions for excellence and “seamless” transfer of power after the death of President Mills and the peaceful and violence free 2012 elections.

The US Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Gene Allan Cretz,  who expressed his country’s sentiments, noted that although his country had been practising democracy for the last 236 years, it was still learning and experimenting and “I suspect you are also doing the same”.

Mr Cretz was interacting with the Minister of Information and Media Relations, Mr Mahama Ayariga, when the latter paid a courtesy call on him at the ministry in Accra today.

He expressed satisfaction at the excellent relations between the two countries which had been of mutual benefit and assured the minister of the United States’ continued support to Ghana.

Mr Gene Allan Cretz is a career diplomat, was the first U.S. Ambassador to Libya since 1972. He arrived in Libya on December 27, 2008???. Mr Cretz speaks Arabic, Dari, Urdu, and Chinese. President Barrack Obama nominated him for the post to Ghana in April of 2012. He was sworn-in as the U.S. Ambassador to Ghana by the Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, on September 11, 2012.

Mr Cretz mentioned former US Secretary of State, Mrs Hilary Clinton’s, commitment to ensuring that more women were brought to mainstream decision making positions.

Mr Ayariga, who was recently sworn in by President John Mahama, said the democracy being enjoyed in the country had become successful till date because the people had decided that that was the best way forward.

He added that political actors at both sides of the divide were willing to play by the rules while the institutions had also lent their support in nurturing the democratic process and commended the Unites States government for supporting such institutions.

He gave the assurance that President Mahama’s –Administration would continue to engage the people at every stage of the governance process through a transparent process.

“It our major commitment to work with the media” Mr Ayariga assured and said the government would continuously explore ways of keeping the citizenry in touch and offer them a real voice.

He reiterated President Mahama’s pledge to immediately sign the Freedom of Information Bill.
