PPP led anti-corruption demonstration not yet over

The Progressive People’s Party’s (PPP) anti-corruption demonstration scheduled for yesterday has been postponed, following a police restraining order from an Accra circuit court.

In a press statement, the PPP said, “as a law abiding political party, seeking to govern a just and disciplined society, we have no choice but to comply with the court order, which in our view constitutes a denial of our constitutional right to freedom of expression.”

A statement signed by Mr William Dowokpor, Convener of the Anti-Corruption Campaign Group, however, pledged that the party would resist through every legitimate means the imposition of the culture of fear and economic expropriation.

“As a disciplined political party, we hold sacred the teachings of our national motto of freedom and justice and fail to appreciate why a legitimate demonstration, which forms part of the official launch of a systematic campaign to remove corruption from Ghana’s governance system, through key reforms to the 21-year-old hybrid 1992 Constitution, should constitute a threat as the police suggests in their official response to our notice to go on demonstration,” it stated.

According to the party, the irony is that the public is seeing the police as a threat to the constitutional ordering of society.

The statement indicated that the PPP remained committed to the reforms of turning the Office of Attorney-General into an Independent Prosecutor’s Office separate from the Ministry of Justice so that the office is removed from the negative influence of partisan politics.

It also called for separating the Legislature (Parliament) from the Executive (Presidency) so that effective checks and balances can operate.

The PPP also advocated and stressed the need for establishing a Ministry of Public Service to continuously seek improvement in the way work was done and take steps to strengthen public institutions in Ghana.
