The Asutifi South Constituency Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Yaw Okyere emerged as the Ahafo Regional Chairman of the party after a keen contest during the regional congress at Goaso on Saturday.

Mr Okyere had 89 votes to beat his closest contender, Mr Owusu Nkrumah Ababio who obtained 72 votes while a third candidate, Mr Alex Afriyie had only two votes.

The Regional Secretary position was also keenly contested by three stalwarts of the party but in the end it was Mr Assanaba Imoro who had 84 votes to beat Richard Adanpoala Kowoji who got 49 votes while Kwame Anin Frimpong garnered 33 votes.

Ms Charity Gardiner proved too hot for her male contender for the Deputy Regional Secretary position when she polled 107 votes to beat Sadick Mohammed who had 58 votes while Ms Salatu Ibrahim also had 107 votes to beat Magina Kwasi who polled 58 votes to become the deputy regional treasurer of the party.

A former Tano North District Chief Executive, Mr Apraku Lartey was elected as the Regional Communications Officer while Ms Rose Boatemaa also got the nod as the Deputy Regional Communications Officer while Chief Abdulai Sana was elected at the Zongo Caucus Coordinator with Abdalla Ibn Chambas as his deputy.

Other positions were Sulemana Masahudu, Youth Organiser, Ahmed Abdul Razak, Deputy Youth Organiser and Ms Polley Mensah Gausu, Deputy Women's Organiser.

After the newly elected Ahafo Regional executives of the party had been sworn into office, the Regional Chairman, Mr Okyere gave assurance that they will work hard to reclaim seats they lost to the New Patriotic Party during the 2016 general election.

"We will not let you down, all the people elected are tried and tested and NDC stalwarts who will work hard for us to achieve our aim of defeating NPP in 2020", he stated.

Mr Okyere, however called for support from the rank and file of the party since without that it would be very difficult to achieve their aim.

In all, 36 candidates contested for various positions while a total of 172 delegates from the six constituencies in the region were expected to cast their ballot in the exercise.

It was a joyous atmosphere at the Goaso Catholic Pastoral Centre where the congress took place as supporters of the various candidates struggled to do a last minute campaign amid singing, drumming and displaying of posters of the contestants.
